1930
MEILENSTEIN 1
The "Capitol" property was planned and built in 1930/31 by the construction company Constantin Von Arx and consisted of a movie theater and four stately apartments.
1931
MEILENSTEIN 2
The Capitol cinema opened on February 19, 1931. The operator at the time was Kurt Schibli. He also owned the Lichtspiele cinema and later the Rex cinema (now KinoKoni)
1982
MEILENSTEIN 3
Following the death of Kurt Schibli's wife, Olten real estate entrepreneur Walter Thommen acquired the "Capitol", "Lichtspiele" and "Rex" buildings.
1984
MEILENSTEIN 4
The Capitol cinema underwent a complete renovation. The more than 400 wooden seats have been replaced by 256 comfortable Club Fauteuilles.
1987
MEILENSTEIN 5
Peter and Isabelle Schibli, the owners and operators of the Palace and Camera cinemas in Olten, have taken over the operation of the Capitol cinema under a tenancy agreement with Thommen Verwaltungs AG. At this time, the cinemas Lichtspiele and Tiffany (formerly Rex, now youcinema) were also taken over by the new family of operators.
2007
MEILENSTEIN 6
Konrad (KinoKoni) Schibli, son of Peter and Isabelle, purchased the "Capitol" property.
2008
MEILENSTEIN 7
In 2008, Konrad Schibli was able to take over Olten Cinemas AG, the operator of the Capitol cinema, from his parents. In 2013, Olten Cinemas AG became youcinema AG, which still operates the cinema, meeting and cultural facilities today.
2013
MEILENSTEIN 8
The "Capitol" property now trades under the name Vintage Cinemas Switzerland AG.
2016
MEILENSTEIN 9
The movie theater was remodeled. The 256 seats were replaced by 122 boxes and lounge seats. A parquet floor was installed on the ground floor and the stage was enlarged. Since then, the conceptual orientation of the "Capitol" has been based on three pillars: 1st Premium Cinema; 2. venue for meetings, seminars and events for up to 150 people; 3. stage and culture.
2018
MEILENSTEIN 10
The second stage of the conversion included the renovation of the façade, the installation of a studio on the top floor and the total renovation of the cinema foyer with the relocation of the entrance to the center of the "Ring-Platz".
April 2023
MEILENSTEIN 11
The Lichtspiele film club moves into the capitol. The venerable Cinema Lichtspiele, built in 1916, changes hands and so the rented film club has to leave. The capitol welcomed the film club with open arms - from September to June, there are now at least one movie a week. four screenings of arthouse films under the umbrella of the Filmverein Lichtspiele.
September 2023
MEILENSTEIN 12

The capitol is developing into a coworking space, but is still a movie theater. Why? A movie theater with a single screen in the middle of a small town can no longer cover its costs. People prefer to visit the KINOKONI on the other side of town or the large entertainment and cinema center youcinema in Oftringen.

But it is an excellent place to work, says Konrad Schibli, the owner of the building and operator of the cinema. "When I don't want to go to the office, I come to the capitol - it's my beloved home office". And that's how the idea of coworking came about. The project is actively supported by Coworking Mittendrin, the city's business development agency, Plug&Start and the Startup Academy! Click here for more information.

Thank you very much!
